Discerning a person’s fruit means evaluating whether someone truly follows Christ or is deceptive. This distinction is central to spiritual discernment.

Examine actions and character to see if lives reflect Christ’s teachings. Here are key scriptures on this topic:

The Fruit of False Prophets

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, you will recognize them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:15-20

Jesus says false prophets are known by their actions. Good followers show good fruit; false teachers show bad fruit. Discerning fruit prevents deception and guides us to true leaders. For example, in a church setting, a leader who consistently shows patience, kindness, and humility in interactions with others may be demonstrating the fruit of the Spirit. Conversely, a leader who fosters division, anger, or pride might be showing signs of bad fruit. Applying discernment in everyday situations helps ensure that community members align with Christ’s teachings, fostering a healthy, supportive environment for spiritual growth.

Do I consistently examine the fruit in the lives of those I look up to as spiritual leaders or teachers to ensure they align with Christ’s teachings?

Fruit of the Spirit virtues

The Fruit of the Flesh vs. Fruit of the Spirit

“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things, there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Galatians 5:19-24

Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit. Our actions show if we’re led by the Spirit or the flesh. This helps us recognize genuine faith. To grow in the Fruit of the Spirit, pray for guidance, seek accountability, and practice virtues daily.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1

John urges believers to test the spirits. Believers need discernment to avoid deception and identify false teachings.

Am I actively cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit in my life, and if so, which virtues am I currently experiencing the most growth in?

Do I see evidence of the Fruit of the Spirit in the way I interact with others, handle difficult situations, and respond to challenges?

Discern Right from Wrong

“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.” Philippians 1:9-10

Paul prays for the Philippians to gain discernment so they can make right choices and be ready for Christ.

Discerning fruit shows true believers and helps them avoid false teachers by examining actions. To deepen understanding, discuss this topic with your group and share experiences to support learning and growth.

In my interactions with others, do I show genuine love and kindness, or do I sometimes act out of selfish motives?

How can I actively practice discernment in my daily life to ensure that my actions, attitudes, and decisions are in line with the teachings of Christ and the evidence of the Fruit of the Spirit?
