“and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.” Ephesians 6:15
Do you ever feel anxious or uneasy? Is there tension in your relationships? If so, your shoes of peace are not on your feet, and the Enemy is attacking you.
Webster describes peace as:
1: a state of tranquility or quiet, such as
a: freedom from civil disturbance
b: a state of security or order within a community provided for by law or custom
2: freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions
3: Harmony in personal relations
4 a: a state or period of mutual concord between governments
b: a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity
5: used interjectionally to ask for silence or calm or as a greeting or farewell
A biblical definition:
In Hebrew, the word for peace is “shalom,” which signifies making amends and restoring something to wholeness. The Greek word “eiréné” emphasizes unity and the coming together of different parts. These words highlight that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but a state of inner tranquility and harmony attainable only by trusting in God.
If you were to look at a Roman soldier’s shoes, you would probably think, “How can these shoes bring peace?” Because a soldier’s shoes were a very intimidating piece of armor.

The shoes are made in two parts. The top piece was made of bronze or brass and covered the soldier’s shin and calf, starting at his knee and ending at the top of his foot. The second part of the shoe was also made in two parts. The top was brass.
Then, durable leather was used to tie the top and bottom together on the sides. The bottom of this shoe has very sharp, one—to three-inch spikes. When a soldier had his boot-like shoes on, he could stand firm in battle.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
A weapon Satan loves to attack us with is anxiety, followed by worry and turmoil. He knows we focus on the chaos when he uses those weapons. Our Enemy wants us to feel uneasy and confused.
And if he can bring division and discord between us and someone else, he has stolen our peace. Wearing our shoes will protect our hearts and minds, give us inner calmness, and guide us on our path.
The soles of the soldiers’ shoes had sharp spikes. These spikes served several purposes. First, he would use the spikes to attack the Enemy. And the second was to help the soldier have a solid footing during the battle.
As you read through the following verses, consider how God’s peace keeps us on solid ground.

“Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.” Psalm 119:165
“For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10
“because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” Luke 1:78-79
I’m sure you have heard of both types of peace. But what’s the difference?
“and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,” Colossians 1:20-22
Peace with God is a beautiful gift when we accept and believe in Jesus, his Son. Through this gift of God’s, we have put off our sinful nature. The barrier that separates us from God is torn down, and we are restored to God.
“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1
Once we accept Jesus as our Savior, our peace with God is secured, and we will spend eternity with Him. But some of us are not walking in God’s peace here and now. Many of us are allowing anxiety, worry, turmoil, and fretfulness rule our emotions and decisions. This is why God gave us His peace as a protective weapon, allowing us to enjoy an abundant life.
“Peace I leave with you; the peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27
God has given us peace through Jesus by placing His Spirit in us. Now we get to share it with those around us, and when we live in and walk in this Spirit, others will see.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23
When we wear our shoes, they become a weapon that protects us and intimidates our Enemy. He will see and hear us marching and know we have a firm foundation. Anywhere we step, he is crushed under our feet.
We are in a battle, but we have been given God’s Divine Armor to protect us and fight with. In my first two posts, I covered the Belt of Truth and the Breastplate of Righteousness. In the coming weeks, I will share the remaining pieces of our armor and explain why it is important to wear them daily.
If you are enjoying my posts, would you share them with your friends and follow me on social media for more encouragement? Blessings!
