Today, I want to focus on the second theme of Advent and study how Mary and Joseph received peace when they learned God chose them to be the parents of His Son.

In my previous posts, I shared how Hope was born in a small town and examined the prophecies about the birth of the Messiah.

Peace, you have found favor with God.

Angel with trumpet, flowers and the word peace

The story of God’s salvation plan takes a miraculous turn for a young woman when she is visited by Gabriel, an Angel of the Lord, in a life-altering encounter.

Imagine the sheer astonishment of a young girl in a small town, engrossed in her daily chores when a soft but powerful voice suddenly addresses her. As she looks up, she is met with the sight of a figure, seemingly a man, but radiating a divine light.

“What kind of greeting is this, and what does this mean?” travels through your thoughts. You feel a slight tremble, but at the same time, peace warms through you. Then you hear the words.

“Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.” Luke 1:30

In your heart, you begin thinking about the prophecies you’d heard spoken about the Messiah. Even though you do not fully understand the message, you trust God and accept this overwhelming news.

Joseph, a man of faith and obedience.

Joseph’s story, often overshadowed, is a testament to his unwavering faith, humility, and obedience when he receives the news about Mary’s pregnancy.

Now, imagine yourself in Joseph’s position. The woman you love shares the unexpected news of her pregnancy. Your initial reaction is a mix of emotions, including anger and disappointment. Then, in a moment of divine intervention, a dream reassures you that taking Mary as your wife is acceptable. The baby she carries is from the Holy Spirit, and you are to name him Jesus. This unexpected turn of events fills you with awe and wonder at God’s plan.

Joseph’s immediate response to the dream was one of trust and obedience. He willingly set aside his fears and doubts to follow God’s command. He took Mary as his wife and became the earthly father of Jesus. This obedience brought a profound sense of peace, reassuring him that he followed God’s direction.

Joseph’s story reminds us that true faith and peace involve trusting God’s direction, even when it challenges our understanding or disrupts our plans.

Peace in a difficult journey.

As a young mother-to-be, Mary was preparing for the day she gave birth.

Mary remembers her time with Elizabeth and what she learned from her cousin. Then, the news came that Rome was taking a census. That means Joseph was to travel to Bethlehem to be counted because that was his hometown.

The journey to Bethlehem was not easy, but Mary and Joseph had peace in it, knowing it was part of God’s plan and fulfilled the prophecy that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.

The promise of peace has come.

As Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, Mary’s labor pains began. The little town was crowded when they arrived, and all the Inns were full.

Joseph may have had a moment of panic when he saw Mary’s sweat on her brow. But then he remembered the words from the Angel, and peace filled his heart.

The innkeeper offers a humble stable, and Joseph, accepting the situation, prepares it for Mary and the baby. In this simple, rustic setting, amidst the sounds of animals and the anticipation of birth, a profound peace settles over them. This peace comes from accepting the situation as part of God’s plan, bringing comfort and reassurance.

As Mary breathed through each pain, she remembered Elizabeth’s advice. She had laid the clothes out to wrap Jesus in and had water nearby to clean him.

Finally, infant cries break through the night. Mary is exhausted from labor, but joy fills her as she counts the tiny baby’s fingers and toes.

Joseph is watching over the mother and child. In awe and wonder at what they had just experienced.

A stable, a manager for animals, was on one very special night on royal ground. The King left his throne in heaven to become a baby and bring peace to a lost world.
