Many people pursue happiness through financial security, relationships, rest, or achievement. However, these sources are often temporary and may diminish during challenging periods.

In contrast, the joy that God provides to His children is enduring. For example, I remember a friend who, while facing a difficult season of unemployment and uncertainty, continued to express gratitude and hope rather than despair. In the midst of her struggles, she found an unexplainable peace and strength in prayer and in reading Scripture, often sharing how God’s presence uplifted her spirit even on the hardest days. As Sam Storms stated, “Joy is not necessarily the absence of suffering, it is the presence of God.”

When have you experienced joy?

I invite you to take a moment and reflect: When have you experienced joy in the midst of challenge or hardship? If you feel comfortable, please share your own story or insight with the group. Hearing each other’s experiences can encourage us to see how God’s joy is present in many different situations.

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.” Habakkuk 3:17-18 NIV.

The joy described by Habakkuk is not dependent on external circumstances. As a fruit of the Spirit, this joy enables believers to maintain a positive outlook when viewing life from God’s perspective. We see this same enduring joy reflected throughout Scripture. For instance, David often expressed joy and trust in God while fleeing from danger or facing adversity, as seen in many of his psalms. Similarly, the Apostle Paul wrote about rejoicing in the Lord even as he endured imprisonment and hardship (Philippians 4:4). These examples remind us that, as Habakkuk did, God’s people can find lasting joy regardless of their circumstances.

Fruit of the Spirit -JOY

God Cultivates Joy

God cultivates this joy within us when we dedicate our lives to Him and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. He desires that all His children experience His joy. Scripture states, “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”
-John 15:10-11 NIV.

The joy that God provides enables us to confront challenges by relying on Him for hope and strength. This joy increases as we remain close to Him and allow His guidance in our lives. True joy is rooted in knowing and trusting God. To help cultivate this joy in daily life, you can start each morning by listing things you are grateful for, no matter how small. During stressful moments, pause and offer a short prayer, asking God for peace and perspective.

Setting aside a few minutes each day to read Scripture or reflect on God’s promises can also help anchor your heart. Other practical ideas include keeping a gratitude journal where you write down blessings and answered prayers, or sharing joys and thanksgivings together in group prayer. Joining others to celebrate how God is at work can uplift everyone and deepen joy in the community.

The Apostle Paul encourages believers in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 to “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” He also writes, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” -Romans 12:12 NIV.

Finding Joy in our Struggles

All individuals encounter hardship and pain, yet God understands these struggles. Even in times of disappointment, He calls us to remain close to Him and receive His joy. He extends the invitation: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 NIV.

God does not intend for us to be burdened by worldly concerns, which can impact us both physically and emotionally. He desires that His children experience enduring joy through the Holy Spirit.

God offers enduring joy to all who seek Him. Pray and remain close to Him. “Until now, you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask, and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” -John 16:24 NIV.

I hope you experience God’s abundant joy and allow Him to cultivate it within you. With His joy, you may flourish both in the present and in the life to come. I also encourage you to share your own experiences of joy or answered prayer with others, or take a moment to pray for someone in need. By supporting one another in this way, we can build a stronger community and encourage each other to grow in faith and joy.

As we close, would you be willing to share a recent moment of joy or an answered prayer in your life? Your story may encourage others and help us grow closer as a group.
