He declares that his purpose was not to be served but to serve. His ultimate act of service was to sacrifice his life as a ransom for humanity. Jesus’s sacrificial love exemplifies the epitome of leadership. He leads by example, giving himself entirely for the sake of others.
Philippians 2:5 begins by urging believers to adopt the same mindset that characterized Jesus’s life. To have this mindset, the well-being and service of others replace self-centered ambitions. It challenges leaders to prioritize their followers’ needs over their own gain.
The next verse describes Jesus’s divine nature, highlighting his equality with God. Despite his exalted position, Jesus didn’t exploit it for his own benefit. He lets his humility shine through as he willingly relinquishes divine privilege for the sake of humanity’s salvation.
In this verse, we see the essence of a servant leader. Jesus humbles himself by becoming a servant, depriving himself of the grandeur and majesty inherited in his divine nature. He chooses to identify with our strengths, joys, and experiences.
This verse unveils the ultimate depth of Jesus’ humility. He took on human form but also submitted himself to the point of death—and not just any death, but the excruciating, humiliating death of crucifixion, driven by love for each of us. The act of self-sacrifice underscores his commitment to serve others above himself.
