The next piece of our godly armor is our Helmet of Salvation.

‘and take the helmet of salvation” Ephesians 6:17

Each piece of our armor protects an area of our spiritual bodies to which our enemy sends his attack. However, the enemy knows one area that influences all others: our minds.

Many battles are fought in our minds. Satan knows how to wait for a stray look, an angry outburst, or an dangerous emotion before beginning his attack. That’s why the Helmet of Salvation is so important.

Our helmet protects our minds, just as the helmet of the Roman soldier protected his head from the enemy’s broad axe.

Design of the of the helmet.

Helmet of salvation

The helmet of a Roman soldier was a beautiful piece of sculpture and a protective piece of armor. It was made of bronze with pieces that covered the cheeks and neck. The helmet fit his head with a spongy material inside to help it form to his head. And to help with the weight, as the helmet was cumbersome.

The outside of the helmet was decorated with beautiful engravings or etchings. It would also have large, brightly colored feathers or horse hair that came up out of the top. Some would be so long that they went down the soldier’s back.

Wearing our helmet of Salvation.

Can you imagine seeing a Roman soldier’s helmet and how beautiful and noticeable it would be? Well, guess what? Our helmet is just as lovely and much more noticeable than theirs was.

It is the best gift God gave each of us it is the gift of Salvation.

When wearing our helmet of Salvation, we walk with powerful confidence, knowing we live daily in the light of eternity and our promised future. Our helmet, when we wear it daily, becomes a defensive weapon that shields, covers and protects us from all the enemy’s deceptive schemes.

What is Salvation?

Webster defines salvation as.

1 a deliverance from the power and effects of sin

b the agent or means that effects salvation

c Christian Science the realization of the supremacy of infinite Mind over all bringing with it the destruction of the illusion of sin, sickness, and death

2liberation from ignorance or illusion

3 a: preservation from destruction or failure

b: deliverance from danger or difficulty

Lexeme Theological Workbook. Salvation is the rescue from a state of danger and the restoration to wholeness and prosperity.

God’s beautiful gift of Salvation saves us from our sins and the penalty of death. But it also restores us, giving us a new identity and an inheritance.

The helmet of Salvation and our identity.

One of Satan’s schemes is to make us forget our identity. Think about how many times these thoughts have stolen who you are.

Am I a mistake? Am I unworthy? I’m unforgettable, unloved, incapable or undesirable. Maybe I can lose my Salvation. All of these thoughts are lies and give Satan an open invitation to attack.

We need to have our helmets firmly fitted on our heads. As you read the following scripture, look for the truth you can take to replace those lies.

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know, when I sit down, and when I rise up, you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path, and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord , you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.” Psalm 139:1-6

“‘For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!” ‘Psalm 139:13-17

The helmet of Salvation is our inheritance.

What do you think of when you hear the word inheritance? Usually, the thought is that someone has passed away and left a large sum of money or land for another person.

Maybe you think about family heirlooms passed down through generations, but we received a grand inheritance when we accepted Jesus as our Savior.

“as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:10-12

God loves us so much that He chose us, adopted us, bestowed His grace upon us, and redeemed us and gave us our Salvation. Then, as a bonus, He gave us an unlimited lavish inheritance that we did not deserve and could not earn.

“and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” Romans 8:17

The helmet of Salvation protects our minds.

When we have a strong knowledge of our Salvation, our enemy’s schemes cannot get a foothold in our minds. Satan is always looking for ways to attack us, and the first place he looks is in our minds. If he can plant a single seed of doubt or unbelief in our minds, and it grows, he has won the battle.

But God knows the enemy’s battle plan and gave us his helmet, his beautiful, intricately designed, ornate defensive weapon. Salvation.

How to wear the Helmet of Salvation?

Our helmets do no good protecting us if we don’t know how to put them on. So the first thing to know—or the first question to ask—is: Have you accepted Jesus, God’s Son, as your Savior?

Salvation redeems us. And then salvation restores, protects, and shields us. That is why we must put on our helmets daily.

We study God’s Word, take every thought captive to Him, and renew our minds. Meditating on God’s truth protects our minds, and then we begin to change our thoughts, how we speak to others, and how we enjoy life.
